Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 3 Eroica, 4 & 5 captures a moment of hard-earned authority from Daniel Barenboim, who approached these works not as monuments to be conquered, but as living arguments still capable of surprise. Recorded with patience and purpose, this interpretation feels seasoned rather than ceremonial.

Released in 2000 and drawn from sessions made in 1999 for Teldec, these performances mark Barenboim’s long-awaited return to the complete Beethoven symphonies, shaped alongside the Staatskapelle Berlin, an orchestra whose dark, flexible tone has centuries of history baked into its sound. Barenboim famously waited until the music had “matured in him,” and the result is a cycle rooted in dialogue, not display.

Symphony No. 3 Eroica strides forward with muscular confidence, its opening movement broad but never bloated, while the Funeral March unfolds with weighty inevitability. Symphony No. 4 offers contrast and clarity, buoyant and classically poised, before Symphony No. 5 delivers its iconic opening with granite heft and long-breathed tension, allowing the drama to build organically rather than rush toward fate.

This 2LP pressing marks the first time Barenboim’s Beethoven symphony cycle appears on vinyl, issued as part of a three-album rollout covering all nine symphonies. For collectors, it is both a sonic and philosophical statement - Beethoven as a lifelong conversation, pressed into grooves meant to be lived with, not merely admired.
