An iconic figure of the Bossa Nova movement, Brazilian pianist, composer, and arranger Joao Donato (1934-2023) introduced a new original rhythm pattern to the genre. He was profoundly influential, having inspired generations of musicians, including Joao Gilberto who confessed to having taken his bossa nova beat for violin from Donato's piano playing.

Donato's solo career includes twenty-nine albums, among which 'A Bossa Muito Moderna'is one of his most highly rated. A quartet session from 1962, it features the great drummer Milton Banana, widely known for his playing with Joao Gilberto and Stan Getz.
