Wednesday’s Bleeds is a serrated love letter to Southern storytelling, the band’s signature creek rock distilled into its rawest, most articulate form. It is both a self-portrait and a collage, stitched from Karly Hartzman’s tangled memories, borrowed scenes, and sharply humorous gut punches.
Arriving as the spiritual successor to Rat Saw God, the album shows a band fully fluent in its own language. Hartzman’s demos become expansive, muscular songs as the group leans into years of relentless touring and tight-knit collaboration. Recorded once again at Asheville’s Drop of Sun with producer Alex Farrar, these tracks feel lived-in and fiercely intentional, a set of songs built on instinct sharpened by repetition.
Bleeds thrives on contrast, moving from indie-pop sweetness to sludgy noise to country-laced confession without ever losing its emotional thread. The lap steel textures of Xandy Chelmis and the dusky guitar work of Jake Lenderman give pieces like Bleeds and the album’s thunderous centerpiece a windswept ache, while Hartzman’s phrasing turns everyday images into jolting revelations. The dazzling specificity of her writing reaches a peak here, where the sound of the words matters as much as their meaning.
As a vinyl experience, Bleeds captures Wednesday at their most confident and most curious. It is a record that treats vulnerability as craft and chaos as necessary truth, offering collectors a vivid snapshot of one of rock’s most compelling modern voices in full bloom.
